Departments & Programs

Twenty-five academic departments offer a wide variety of courses, interdisciplinary programs, and experiential learning opportunities. Trinity also offers courses and majors in interdisciplinary programs that range from international studies to neuroscience, making it a university of growth and discovery.


  • Art and Art History

    The department of Art and Art History features two distinct programs, one in art history, the other in studio arts. The art history program explores art and architecture in their historical contexts, while the studio arts program teaches the technical and conceptual components of artistic creation.

  • Biology

    The Department of Biology engages and supports students in a dynamic learning environment that promotes a broad, integrated, and interdisciplinary understanding of biological systems. We value and mentor students as colleagues in inquiry, blurring the lines between scholarship and teaching.

  • Chemistry

    The hallmarks of Trinity's chemistry program are its innovative and progressive curriculum, student exposure to modern sophisticated instrumentation, and a strong emphasis on undergraduate research, all of which prepare students for advanced degrees and careers at some of the country's best graduate schools, medical schools, and corporations.

  • Classical Studies

    Classical studies at Trinity

    The classical studies department offers an interdisciplinary program that melds history, art history, anthropology, religion, gender studies, and philosophy in studying the ancient Mediterranean world. Courses focus on languages and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome as well as their impact on contemporary society.

  • Communication

    Trinity's department of communication teaches theories and skills that prepare students for careers in media writing, production, advertising, and public relations. Students have extensive opportunities for hands-on media experience through TigerTV, the student-run television station; KRTU, the campus radio station; and the Trinitonian, the student-run newspaper.

    Trinity's computer science department provides broad training in design, systems, applications, and the theory of computing. Students receive substantial laboratory experience with computers, programming, and other related areas, which provide the knowledge and tools to be successful in both theoretical understandings and applied computing.

  • Engineering Science

    Trinity's department of engineering science is one of the nation's top-ranked, ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering programs. Our focus on teaching and design, in addition to our special attention to developing students' communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, differentiates us from hundreds of other engineering programs across the country.

    Trinity University's English program seeks to refine students' abilities in prose argument, critical and interpretive thinking, and oral communication. Diverse course offerings include topics in British and American literatures, theory, post-colonial literatures, gender studies, Jewish literature, African-American literature, creative writing, and rhetoric, providing students a well-rounded experience.

    Trinity University's department of geosciences brings the tools of physics, chemistry, biology, computational science, and mathematics to bear on the understanding of Earth, our home planet.     Trinity University's health care administration program develops leaders who are able to adapt and respond to the needs of health care and prepares them for the challenges of 21st century health care delivery.

    The study of history plays a central and formative role at Trinity. Offering new perspectives on the past as well as ongoing influences the past has on the present, history promotes critical thinking, develops analytical skills, nurtures open-minded examination of controversial issues, and encourages writing excellence.

  • Human Communication and Theatre

    Effective and creative expression of ideas is central to both a liberal arts education and to effective citizenship in a democracy. Studying human communication and theatre—among the oldest disciplines of study in Western civilization—gives students an opportunity to understand, assess, and perform the essential activity of self expression.

With a strong emphasis on gaining international perspective and experiences, many majors spend part of their college career in another country, immersed in another language and culture.

  • Modern Languages and Literatures

    Modern Languages and Literatures at Trinity

    The study of modern languages and literatures provides individuals the opportunity to learn a language while exploring the culture, literature, and history of the culture from which the language derives. The department offers majors and minors in Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish, and courses in Italian.

  • Music

    Music at Trinity

    Musical life at Trinity can be heard in the choir, orchestra, wind ensemble, and many other musical groups open to all students at Trinity. Students who choose to study performance, composition, or music education do so through ensemble participation, private lessons, and courses in music history and theory.

  • Philosophy

    Philosophy at Trinity

    Philosophy students evaluate principles of conduct, develop standards of evidence, and learn methods for resolving conflicts and appraising arguments. The curriculum covers traditional areas of philosophy such as ethics and logic and also offers courses such as Philosophy of Culture and Biomedical Ethics.

    Physics is the examination of matter, energy, and the interactions of forces that affect them. Through their explorations of the physical world, students in Trinity's department of physics and astronomy strive to understand the laws affecting all natural phenomena from subatomic particles to entire galaxies.

    The study of political science is crucial to understanding and actively participating in today's competitive political environment. Trinity's political science department provides students with a strong foundation for the many career options in law, politics, public administration, non-governmental organizations, teaching, foreign service, and international affairs.

  • Psychology

    Trinity’s psychology curriculum reflects both the diversity of its sub-disciplines and the universality of their reliance on methodological sophistication. Courses in statistics, methods, and supervised research train students to think critically about psychological phenomena and make them aware of the intellectual values of the discipline.

    The School of Business offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, in addition to having a high quality Master of Science program in accounting. All of the School's programs are accredited by AACSB - the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International.

  • Advising Programs

    Advising programs assist students who plan to attend law school, medical school, or enter health professions. Students are encouraged to pursue degrees of their choice while also taking the courses necessary for entrance into these schools or professions after graduation.

    Trinity's unique EAST program is a multifaceted program that prepares students for life in the Pacific century. Through a combination of language training, in-country experiences, internships, and formal exchange programs, EAST grooms future leaders in business, government, science, and education to be comfortable and confident in the global environment.

    The environmental studies program at Trinity provides an interdisciplinary study of Earth's environment and how human beings interact with it. Going beyond the natural sciences, environmental studies students examine environmental issues from perspectives of social policy, art, and the humanities.

  • MAS: Mexico, The Americas, and Spain

    Mexico, the Americas, and Spain (MAS) draws on the rich Hispanic culture of San Antonio as well as Trinity's proximity to Mexico and Latin America. Supported by more than 30 faculty, the MAS mission is to enrich the bilingual and bicultural environment on- and off-campus by providing students with opportunities for engagement with Hispanic language, life, and culture.

    Urban studies at Trinity is designed to expose students to urban history, urban society, and urban development while encouraging contributions to social change—all in the vibrant, diverse city of San Antonio. Students are actively engaged in local urban affairs through internships and research on local conditions while becoming citizens of the city.
